A is for Musk Ox

Cabatingan, Erin.  New York: Roaring Book Press, 2012.  9781596436763.

Quantitative Reading Level:  Reading Level 2.6, Lexile 470

Qualitative Reading Analysis:

I would rate this as Middle Low on the “Text Complexity: Qualitative Measures Rubric for Literary Text”.  Although it is an alphabet book there is a lot of information given about musk oxen the language can be ironic.

Summary:
Musk Ox ate Zebra’s apple which the zebra was going to use for his alphabet book.  Musk Ox decides to help Zebra out and proceeds to go through the alphabet explaining why every letter “is for musk ox”.  The book is really funny and provides some good information about musk oxen.

Content Area: Reading/ELA

Curriculum Suggestions:

Students could compare and contrast this alphabet book with other alphabet books.

This book could be used in a discussion of “voice” in writing.

Students could write similar alphabet books about other animals.

Personal Thoughts:
I love this book.  It is so funny.  I read this to my 1st-3rd graders last year and they really liked it.

High Interest Annotation:  Musk Ox thinks he is really special.  In fact, the whole alphabet is about him.
